Deva - the most important fortresses of Transylvania

The name of the city comes from the Dacian word "dava" meaning fortress.

Deva Fortress

Deva Fortress

Situated on one of the most important communication lines with Transylvania, the fortress of Deva has played the role of sentinel for everyone coming and going for centuries. The evidence of the existence of the fortress Deva dates back to the Neolithic period and the Turdas-Vinča culture.

In the 1st. century BC here there was a Dacian fortified structure, evidenced by the fragments of the walls and the interior of the buildings discovered on the site. The history of the fortress has been developed by many difficult moments, including the Roman occupation of 2nd century AD, the occupation of Hungarians in the 11th century, the invasion of the Turks in the 16th century, 17th century rule of Habsburg,  the 18th century  wave of plague,  then culminating with the explosion of the ammunition magazine of August 13, 1849 that destroyed most of the fortress.

Today you can see a part of the external and interior walls with access by on foot or with a panoramic cable car. At the top of the hill you can admire a beautiful view of the city and the early mountains.

At the foot of the hill there is the Fortress Park which paths, adorned with statues of various important Romanians characters, leading to the Magna Curia Castle and the beautiful home of Doctor Petru Groza.

The Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization of Deva, or the Magna Curia Castle, built in 16th century, is the oldest building in the city. Also known as the Bethlen Castle, after the name of one of its owners, it  has had various architectural styles until the current  baroque style that it dressed with great authority.

Since 1934 it has become home to the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization. The museum already existed since 1880 in other locations, and houses an extensive collection of archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnography and art. Deva is a city where the days flow slowly away from the chaos of big cities, where the kindness of the people and the beauty of the place conquer anyone.
