Engels Bistro, a cozy place in the center of Cluj-Napoca

There are probably few things that can lift up our spirits on a Monday morning – you get up a 7 o’clock, you leave your warm bed only to go out into the cold and rush to work. Every Monday morning is a sad and gloomy picture. But what if there were a place where you could get a warm cup of coffee and enjoy a sandwich, a soup, a steak… (pretty much anything you can imagine) with… even your co-workers?

Luckily, there is such a place right vis-à-vis the Olympia Business Center on Dorobanţilor Street. Ever since it opened up, it has seemed like a very cool and trendy place, where people working in the area would have breakfast or lunch. But to drive from other parts of the city on a Sunday afternoon to eat here seemed like a bit of a stretch.

What was so special about this place that made people dress up and come at the weekend? Of course, it looked very glamorous from the outside: windows from top to bottom, a wooden terrace circumscribed by flowers, in spring and summer, and festive lights, in autumn and winter. But it seemed rather odd for a restaurant/bistro to be so frequented, especially when it is not very central. Something keeps bringing people back here. Perhaps a look at the menu might make things clearer.

The breakfast is very rich and appetizing. There are no less than 12 types of omelet to choose from: with ham, bacon, mushrooms, sweet corn, sour cream, spinach etc. Or you can have jam, butter, ham, bacon and eggs separately. Besides these, there are also a few specialties. Very enticing are the Engels eggs, which contain onions and mayonnaise, or shepherd eggs, which are made with onions, mayonnaise and cracklings.

For the main course, you can choose between a few specials, some of which are very interesting combinations. For instance, turkey breast with chestnuts and asparagus might be worth a try. There are also all kinds of platters, with different kinds of meat, cheese, eggs etc. Another interesting sounding dish is pig’s tongue with garlic dip and golden potatoes.

For dessert, they also have a delicious selection of cakes and ice cream. For instance, they have pancakes with Nutella, pancakes with jam, apple crumble or dumplings. The drink offer is also very rich: Appletini, Martini Cocktail, Cosmopolitan, Lemondrop Martini, Margarita etc.
