Many people and many places become famous for the peculiar things that they propose. The Brașovian settlement of Ghimbav appears to have won its 15 minutes of fame through a project which is not only peculiar but also sustainable; the project focuses on the locals' obligation to plant either fruit trees or regular trees when carrying out a construction. Specifically, for any house that is built, the developer has the obligation to plant three trees, while for a block of flats a tree will need to be planted for every apartment it comprises.
This way, the city, which does not house more than 5,000 inhabitants, aims to respond to deforestation, which has become increasingly present and increasingly frequent in the region, and to ensure a lasting ecological reconstruction. Also, Ghimbav authorities want to prevent the alarming increase of pollution levels expected as a result of the construction of the airport that will serve the city of Brașov. And since Brașov is an important touristic center, it is expected that the tranquility of its small neighboring town will be disturbed with the arrival of the airport.
Authorities have already set fines for those who will not comply with this green ordinance, amounting to RON 1,000 lei (aprox EUR 210) for individuals and RON 3,000 lei (aprox EUR 650) for developers. Obviously, the amount of the fines will increase if they fail to produce effects. But this sustainable initiative does not stop here. It goes beyond the construction sphere, inviting local people to contribute to the ecological reconstruction of the city by other means as well. For example, all married young people will have the right to plant a tree in public space, and when a child is born, his parents will also have the right to plant a tree that would bear the child's name.
