In the heart of Apuseni Mountains from western Romania an ideal destination for one-day trip is located. That is Meziad Cave, which was declared natural monument. The cave in Bihor County on Meziadului Valley is deemed one of the biggest in Europe.

Meziad Cave impresses tourists by its beauty but also because it is a large cave, one of the longest in Romania. It stretches on almost five kilometers and is made up of several stories; in it a natural bridge can be found, as well as rich formations.

Meziad Cave is similar to an underground gothic cathedral given the enormous halls that can be found there. The cave entrance is large in size, being 16 m high and 10 m wide. The cave is located at 397 m altitude and has two karstification levels: a lower one, with spacious impressive halls and the upper one, which is divided into three different areas. But maybe the most attractive area for tourists is the Natural Bridge, that being the place where the two levels overlap and the cave riches a height of up to 35 m.

People have been attracted by this nature wonder since prehistoric times; it has been inhabited even by primitive men. In year 2012, the cave was reorganized and the access paths renovated, thus that tourists and speologists can reach it easier.

Why is Meziad Cave unique?

Meziad Cave is deemed a natural monument and a unique speological reserve in Romania. That is because a serious of fascinating discoveries was made here. The remains of the cave bear were found here, as well as traces of human inhabiting, among which ceramics of Bronze Age. Recently, a 6,500-year old human skull was found in the cave. Meziad Cave is home to 13 bat species of the 26 species that live in Romania; they hibernate quietly on the cave ceilings, thus that the curious tourists can easily admire them.

In the cave of Bihor County several types of rare minerals appeared. As well, water dug in stone various cave formations, such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns or drapes. Tourists can visit the cave only while being accompanied by guides, in exchange of a visitation fare of Lei 15 / adults and Lei 10 / children.
