With a length of approximately 953 kilometers, the Prut River originates in the Forested Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine and flows into the Danube River near the town of Giurgiulești.
Along most of its middle and lower course, the Prut forms the natural border between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, representing one of the most important geographical and political boundaries in the region. Throughout the centuries, the river has played a strategic role in the development of human communities and in facilitating economic exchanges between the territories it traverses.
The Prut River basin covers an area of more than 27,000 square kilometers and includes numerous tributaries that contribute to the water supply of local communities, agricultural lands, and natural ecosystems. Among its most important tributaries are the Jijia, Bașeu, Racovăț, and Lopatnic rivers.
A key element in the management of the river’s water resources is the Stânca–Costești Hydrotechnical Complex, built through the cooperation of Romania and the Republic of Moldova. The facility contributes to electricity generation, flow regulation, and the reduction of flood risks in riverside areas.
The Prut River possesses significant ecological value. Its floodplain and associated wetlands provide habitats for numerous plant and animal species, some of which are protected at the European level. The ecosystems within the Prut basin serve as important habitats for migratory birds, fish species, and wetland-specific vegetation.
From a historical perspective, the river was mentioned as early as Antiquity by the Greek historian Herodotus, who referred to it as “Pyretus.” Over time, the Prut has remained an important landmark for the economic and cultural development of communities throughout the Romanian and Eastern European regions.
In the current context of climate change and increasing pressure on water resources, the protection and sustainable management of the Prut River have become priorities for Romania, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine. Biodiversity conservation projects, water quality monitoring, and cross-border cooperation are essential for preserving the ecological balance of this important waterway.
