The Romanian traditional wine, old and new varieties – „The Field of the Crown Segarcea - Tămâioasă Roză”, an wine for a king

When the plantation from Segarcea was remade it was kept a parcel with „Tămâioasă Roză”, a variety with over 100 years of life, akin to Muscat Rouge Frontignan, which once existed in southern France. This variety rescued from destruction, wins the gold medal in 2012 at „Challenge International du Vin” in Bordeaux with „Tămâioasă Roză”

„The Field of the Crown Segarcea - Tămâioasă Roză”

In 1884, during the reign of the King Carol I, the Royal House of Romania received for administration twelve areas, including one in Segarcea, for cultivating grapevines. And thus was born a royal vineyard under the auspices of the Crown, whose noble wines has accompanied the Royal Family at the diplomatic dinners, official events and celebrations.

Between 1906 -1908 it was built and wine cellar whom were assigned the Crown insignia (royal family crest and wreath royal lilies). Under the administration of the Royal House, the area has seen a great flowering. The wine quality of Segarcea began to be recognized and rewarded with many prizes and medals at various international competitions (as the gold medal received in 1936 to Paris).

Since 2005 the plantation was fully restored, under a new administration, who proposed to respect both the architecture from the monarchy period and the historical values and traditions, which preserves its identity. They resumed even certain habits of the place, so on St. Trifon day, on February 1, the priest sprinkles with holy water the orchards and the grapevines, and only after this moment they begin the cuts and the preparations for a new season with fruit. The spirit of the Field of Crown is kept also in the cellar (vinoteca) which houses precious oenological treasures. The earliest vintages kept here are from the period 1917-1974.

In September 2015 it celebrated a decade of restoration of the royal vineyard and held „a real tasting of history” of the oldest and newest wines. The star of the collection was the Frontignan Muscat 1938 along with two other exceptional wines, Pinot Noir 1958 and Sauvignon Blanc 1962. There were added a Royal Fetească and a Riesling 2007 and two symbolic representations of the new wines, as Pinot Noir 2007 and 2008 and the already famous, Sauvignon Blanc 2011.

Tămâioasă Roză - an unique variety in the world, a century of experience

When the plantation from Segarcea was remade it was kept a parcel with „Tămâioasă Roză”, a variety with over 100 years of life, akin to Muscat Rouge Frontignan, which once existed in southern France. They managed to plant an area of 14ha with this variety, and so the „Field of Crown Segarcea” is the sole owner of the red grapes.

A variety rescued from destruction, wins the gold medal in 2012 at „Challenge International du Vin” in Bordeaux with „Tămâioasă Roză” (a semisweet rosé wine). The delicate and powerful bouquet of the wine is formed from distinctive flavours of ripe peaches, white apricots and red berries, and the taste is extended with a final flavour of petals and jam of roses.
