Valea Călugărească, the Research, Development Institute for Viticulture

Dealu Mare vineyard is one of the largest vineyards from Romania and it covers an area of 14,500 hectares. Archaeological research has revealed the evidence of vine culture on these lands concerning the existence of the Dionysian cult in Thrace, the old territory situate on South and North of the Danube to the Carpathians. Documentary attested in the 14th-15th Centuries, the culture of the vine increased after 1950 when the Valea Călugărească Experimental Station was set up, which aimed to solve the scientific problems of viticulture and winemaking. In 1967 it was transformed into the Research Institute for Viticulture and Winemaking.

The scientific research and technological development activity is carried out in its own laboratories, pilot stations and experimental fields and in 10 research stations located in the main vineyards and wine-growing areas of the country (Blaj, Bujoru, Drăgășani, Greaca, Iași, Miniș, Murfatlar, Odobești Pietroasa and Ștefănești).

The Research and Development aims are viticulture ecology, slope cultivation, nutrition and fertilization, the production of red and white wines specific to Dealu Mare vineyards, testing of disease control products, pests and weeds in viticulture.

Valea Călugărescă Research, Development Institute for Viticulture and Vinification offers scientific and technological services as follows: chemical analyzes in wines and distillates, warnings on the application of treatments to vines, agrochemical mapping and foliar diagnoses, projects for planting and cultivation assistance, cultivation assistance to the winemakers in case of damage of the plantations, of the harvests or of the deterioration of some wines, technical consultancy on specialized fields and courses.

Currently, the Institute has an area of about 500 ha on the fruit, with a structure, which stands out the varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Feteasca Neagra, Pinot Noir, Merlot, for high quality red wines and varieties: Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, Feteasca Alba, Italian Riesling, Muscat Ottonel for high quality white wines.
