One day tour of Bucharest

One day tour of Bucharest

The Palace of Parliament is one of the largest administrative buildings in the world – the second after the Pentagon. From there, go on the Dambovita quay towards the Union Square. When you reach Dealul Mitropoliei, don’t hesitate to climb the hill in order to visit the Patriarchal Cathedral – founded by Constantin Voda Serban (1654-1658).

Make a left turn to the Old City Center – a scenic area with many old buildings and many “inn” type joints. The most renowned is Manuc’s Inn (built in 1808) but also Caru’ cu Bere (opened in 1879).

Don’t miss the Old Princely Court, the first princely court from the time of Mircea cel Batran – here the oldest historical evidences of Bucharest are kept from the 13th century. You will also see the imposing palace that hosts the National Bank of Romania – a neoclassical building of the 19th century – as well as the Stavropoleos Church – an arhictectural jewelry in Brancovenesc style erected in 1724.

Then, go back upwards on Lipscani and you will reach Calea Victoriei(Victory Avenue) where you may find the CEC Palace and the National History Musem, Capsa House, National Military Circle, Palace of Telephone, Royal Palace, Cantacuzino Palace, buildings that are monuments with a rich history and a magnificent architecture.

Before reaching the University (built in 1864), pass through the Macca-Villacrosse Passage where the first stock exchange of Bucharest was located.

In the University Square (km 0) you may find the National Theater, Sutu Palace – home of the Museum of Bucharest Municipality – and Coltea Church – a monument of the 18th century that, together with the building of Coltea Hospital, encompasses a single architectural assembly.

Then, go towards the Victory Square where you may find the building of the Romanian Government, the “Grigore Antipa” National Museum of Natural History, the Museum of the Romanian Peasant and the National Museum of Geology.

For one day, the route is enough considering that a part of it is dedicated to the visiting of the museums which is worthwhile.
