Since the 14th century, the Mehedinti area estates from the Drîncei Valley are known for their special wines, but their moment of glory was reached in the 18th century during the reign of Constantin Brâncoveanu.
Situated on Oltenia Hills, in the village of Oprișor, the Oprișor Winery continues the wine tradition for hundreds of years, following a German vinicultural model. The winery was founded in 1994, being bought by the company Reh - Kedermann (a German winery dating from 1920) that replanted the 250 hectares of vineyards. Cultivated grapes varieties are: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Rhein Riesling, Tamaioasa Romaneasca, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Feteasca Neagra, Shiraz, Dornfelder, Zinfandel.
The Oprișor Winery has a fermentation capacity of 1 500 000 liters and a storage capacity of one million liters, producing a multitude of premium wines, aged in the 600 barrels. The wines of the Oprișor Winery are marketed under the labels: Val Duna, Măiastru, Caloian, La Cetate, Cuplola Sanctis, Rusalcă Albă, Jiana Rose, Drăgaica Rosie, Cabernet Sauvignon Crama Oprișor, Smerenie, Passarowitz 1718, Ispita by Liviu Grigorică, Detaliu.
The “Erotikon” collection is graphically designed by the visual artist Ciprian Paleologu and it is bottled in 6 700 bottles, of which 600 are numbered and signed in 200 wooden boxes.
The “Fragmentarium” collection is a limited edition of premium wines of 2 000 bottles.
The “Sherpium” collection is limited to 10 800 bottles, reminding of old perfume containers.
Also available on the market is the collection of sweet wines: “Detaliu (Detail)” or the box with 4 elegant “NenumitA” wines and “Paleologu box”, a collection of strong and flavored wines.
The wine produced by Oprișor Winery has received more than 20 gold medals at national and international competitions, it is included in the famous Gault & Millau Guide with a score of 94 points out of 100, with “Smerenie” label as the best Romanian red wine.
