Autumn is one of the seasons when Romania reveals its diversity at its best.

Autumn in Romania: spectacular landscapes, traditions and unforgettable experiences

From forests gradually turning shades of yellow, copper and red to vineyards during harvest season, traditional villages and historic towns, September and October offer numerous opportunities for travel and exploration.

September still retains many of the characteristics of late summer and, particularly during the first part of the month, the weather is often favourable for excursions and outdoor activities. Romania’s National Meteorological Administration describes September as a month that is warm, especially during its first two decades, in many parts of the country.

The Carpathian Mountains are among the main destinations for those who want to discover the colours of autumn. Transylvania, Maramureș, Bukovina, the Apuseni Mountains and the Subcarpathian regions offer hiking routes, traditional villages, historic fortresses and landscapes that can be explored during a trip lasting several days. During this season, the combination of nature, heritage and local cuisine makes travelling through Romania’s mountain regions a particularly rewarding experience.

Transylvania is one of the regions where autumn can be experienced through both its rural landscapes and historic heritage. Saxon villages, medieval fortresses, castles and historic towns such as Sighișoara, Brașov and Sibiu offer numerous attractions for an autumn journey. The region is also known for its traditional cuisine and wine-growing areas.

Autumn is also the season of harvests. In many rural communities, this period is associated with grape harvesting, as well as the gathering of apples, pears, walnuts and other produce from orchards and gardens. Romanian traditions and customs documented by the National Heritage Institute include practices connected with this time of year, including the tasting of the first must made from freshly harvested grapes and activities carried out in households and orchards.

Vineyards in different regions of Romania become particularly interesting destinations during this period for visitors interested in wine culture and local gastronomy. Grape harvesting is accompanied in some communities by celebrations and events dedicated to the harvest, maintaining the connection between agricultural production, local traditions and rural life. The Romanian traditional calendar includes numerous customs connected with the gathering of crops and autumn agricultural activities.

The Danube Delta can also be included in an autumn journey. September and October are suitable for boat trips, birdwatching and discovering the landscapes of the delta during a quieter period than the peak summer season. Its channels, lakes, reed beds and fishing villages offer a completely different experience from the mountain regions.

For nature lovers, autumn is also an excellent time for walks and hiking in forested areas. The forests of the Carpathians and the Apuseni Mountains offer some of the most impressive landscapes of the season, with changing colours that can be admired in numerous tourist areas across central and northern Romania.

Autumn can also be a good time to discover Romania’s cities. Bucharest, Brașov, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Alba Iulia, Iași and Timișoara each offer different combinations of heritage, culture, gastronomy and urban life, while the more moderate temperatures make walking and sightseeing particularly enjoyable.

From an excursion through the colourful forests of the Carpathians to a visit to a traditional village, from tasting local products and wines to taking a boat trip through the Danube Delta, Romania offers a wide variety of experiences during the autumn months for travellers looking to discover the country in a different season.

Autumn in Romania does not mean the end of the travel season, but rather a change in scenery and atmosphere. It is the season of harvests, spectacular colours, preserved traditions and journeys where nature, heritage and gastronomy come together.
