What makes a bar stand out among the others? Is it the menu? The décor? The services? Or the people that frequent it? It is probably a little bit of all of these things and maybe even more. In a city where bars are opened and closed or are constantly redesigned or reinvented, Insomnia has managed to stay true to itself for 15 years.
It is one of the most popular bars in the city, drawing people of all ages and all walks of life. One of the things that makes it stand out is the décor. The bar is located in an old house in the center of the city, so it gives you the impression of being at home. Moreover, it has a very bohemian feel.
In the beginning it also used to be an art gallery and there were photos or pictures of local artists hung on the walls. The artworks have come down, but they have been replaced by minimalist drawings in different colors on the walls.
There are bottles hung from the ceiling, colored chairs and tables, creating a kaleidoscope of colors. And the drawings change every once in a while, becoming more and more daring. The music is also very agreeable. It is either rock or alternative, although there is sometimes even pop music. So, there is something for every taste. Although no longer an art gallery, Insomnia has maintained its artistic orientation.
There are book launches organized here, poetry readings, concerts and Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties. One special event organized here is called Slana Fest which translates as Ham Fest. Local meat and dairy product producers are invited to showcase their products, while the guests are invited to taste them. Last year, one of the guests also won a roasted pig through drawing lots.
Another interesting event was the reading of a book called “Thoreau’s nephew”, which engendered talks about theatre and esoteric matters. All in all, insomnia is an interesting place to visit because it is both a place where you can enjoy a drink and a conversation with friends as well as attend a cultural event that might get you thinking.
