The „ŞtefanLuchian, Master of Romanian Graphic Arts” Exhibit is focused on the graphic works of Luchian. Over 90 pastels, watercolors and drawings will be exhibited, following chronologically the evolution of the great artist, beginning with the period in which the painter was influenced by the “Jugendstil” style. During this period the painter created the famous cover of the first number of the “Societea Ileana” magazine.
The works of the exhibit are showed in distinct sections. Each section shows the main graphic techniques experimented by the artist – from graphite pencils, conté, charcoal or pastel, to basic watercolor techniques (ink and watercolors).
Famous works include: Safta the Flower Girl, Old Man Nicolae the Fiddler, Filantropia Booth, Inn Without Clients, The Well on Clucerului Street, Racehorses, Portrait of Mrs. Olivier, Apostles Among Peasants, On the Road of Suffering, Brebu Houses, Ialomitei Meadow, Ruins of Comana Monastery, Roses, Carnations, Cornflowers, Field Flowers. The famous self-portraits of the author which are full of expressiveness with a deep look add value and attractiveness to the exhibit. Ştefan Luchian (1868-1916) is the greatest Romanian master of the pastel who managed to give beautiful chromatic tones to his works emitting force and vigor.
Stefan Luchian brought a significant contribution to the development of Romania graphic arts. The painter passed quite quickly over the barriers of classic drawing in pencil or charcoal, using a painting technique providing certain intensity to the drawings. He paved the way for the modernization of Romanian graphic arts.
The painter is recognized as an artistic personality full of originality who managed to create vibrant paintings impressing by a distinct brightness of colors. The Romanian landscape appears in the works of Luchian as real “brilliant splendors” of simplicity and finesse.
