The ethics and aesthetics of the men’s style

'The elegance begins, first of all, with the character of a person, and only after can be refined through clothes.'' Sonya Glyn Nicholson, editor of the Parisian Gentleman

Men's style

Most often, the articles online or in magazines that talk about men's style cover only the outside and describe in detail the clothing that should be worn or not to be worn! Mistakenly, the emphasis is put on the ''fashionable'' pieces and, unfortunately, most of the recommendations are sponsored by brands who pay to be promoted.

Sonya Glyn Nicholson, editor of the Parisian Gentleman, says: ''The elegance begins, first of all, with the character of a person, and only after can be refined through clothes.''

I think a more natural approach would not treat only the outside, but will start from the essence to the external form. The essential order of a person's style should be as follows:

1. Personal ethics, which shapes our life’s principles;

2. Behavior, which derives from personal principles;

3. Appearance, which is modeled by the behavior.

Therefore, the appearance is placed in the last position and cannot be considered a starting point for a discussion about style. Alexander Kraft has highlighted this quite openly: ''If you do not have manners, you're just an imbecile in a suit made to measure''. Instead, the great art style is remarkable when one can be stylish even in casual attire.

Nowadays, too many want to look like someone in a suit. They see a photograph of a very elegant dressed celebrity and they remain as hypnotized. But this plan will never work. Men no longer know the basics of male clothing style or which are the correct proportions for a suit, but want to easily to copy a look seen in a magazine or on Instagram. It is from what also comes the fast fashion culture which promises an elegant look, but in composition with poor quality ingredients: clothes that fall apart after being worn once and harmful materials for the body!

If we look around, we see that the values are no longer the preservation and appreciation of clothing items, like old times, but the obsessive accumulation of "fashionable" pieces that are worn once or maximum twice. In the past, the well-kept shoes could be worn even 10 years; today, without any maintenance and manufactured according to "full speed ahead" we should not be surprised that they arrive in the trash after only one season! All this, on long-term and global, leads to an excessive consumption, waste of raw materials and depreciation of the value of things.

Thus, we return again to the principles of life that influence our behavior, as I said at the beginning.

In other words and instead of conclusion: "The style is the simple way of saying complicated things", said the French writer Jean Cocteau.
