3D Roma - Sarmizegetusa. Turn ON the History

Between April 7th and September 30th, the National History Museum of Transylvania in Cluj-Napoca will be hosting a new type of exposition that offers the possibility of living history. The attendees will be able to travel back in time and space and walk through the city of Rome and the Dacian capital of Sarmizegetusa reconstructed.

The exposition includes 3D reconstructions and virtual simulations of the buildings that constituted the two Roman cities, the most notable of which being the Forum of Augustus and the Peace Forum in Rome and the Big Temple of Sarmizegetusa. Another surprise that awaits visitors is an interactive simulation of the archeological research being undertaken at the headquarters of Dacia’s financial governor.

The two institutions that made this international exposition possible are the Istituto per Tecnologie Applicate ai Beni Culturali in Rome, the Mercati di Traiano – Museo dei Fori Imperiali in Rome and the Museum for Dacian and Roman Civilization in Deva, Romania. These museums both supplied the archeological items and worked on their 3D reconstruction.

The exposition is based on a new concept of interactivity, wherein the public can virtually manipulate the artifacts discovered by archeologists. Furthermore, the director of the National History Museum of Transylvania, Carmen Ciongradi, said that in the next two years, Sarmizegetusa should become the first city in Romania to be entirely reconstructed in 3D.

The exposition combines real artifacts, which can be admired and studied as they have been modeled by the passing of time, and a 3D digital restoration of these artifacts. Emanuel Demetrescu, a representative for the Istituto per le Tecnologie Applicate ai Beni Culturali said that all of the reconstructions were made using hard scientific and archeological evidence.

The exposition uses state-of-the-art technologies that were designed to make learning much more captivating and fun. Not to mention that they leave a far longer-lasting effect than would a text inscribed next to the object.
