“Eugenia” biscuits – a Romanian brand that takes you back in time

A sandwich biscuit filled with cocoa cream and a subtle rum flavor, Eugenia has been produced since the 1940s, when the Dobrogea factory began making these biscuits. They quickly became a popular dessert, and over time their name came to be used generically. The biscuits were given the name “Eugenia,” which later became widely recognized across Romania.

During the communist era, “Eugenia” biscuits were commonly enjoyed during school recess and work breaks. They became a favorite among Romanians, especially since sweets were not widely available at the time. After 1989, Eugenia biscuits grew even more popular and became one of the best-known Romanian brands.

Although they are an affordable product, Eugenia biscuits remain a favorite dessert for many Romanians, largely because they evoke childhood memories. At the same time, they are often introduced to foreigners as a traditional Romanian product whose taste has remained largely unchanged for over sixty years.

Today, the Dobrogea factory uses the “Eugenia” brand name, which it has owned since 1997. The product range has expanded, and it now includes varieties such as Eugenia Original, Eugenia with vanilla cream, cocoa cream, lemon cream, Eugenia Junior with milk and honey, Eugenia Dark, and Eugenia with apple and cinnamon. 

Today, the name “Eugenia” is also used generically, and the biscuits are exported abroad. The largest markets include Germany, Italy, Spain, the United States, and Canada, accounting for nearly 9% of the annual Eugenia production.
