The villages of Maramureș, set up along the mountain rivers, are old settlements dating back to the 14th century, which still preserve traditions and customs that come from the remote times. The Călineşti village, located in the northern part of the region, 59 kilometers from Baia Mare, dates back to 1381. On the places where the settlement were lying towering forests of oak and fir trees. The village located on a blessed land, which enjoys the picturesque location, can boast two of the most beautiful wooden churches, which have been declared monuments of national interest.
The Călineşti Căeni Church, high in 1663, built only from oak wood, has the patronage the "Nativity of the Mother of God". The painting was made in 1754 by the painter Alexandru Ponehalschi. On the southern side of the vault, five scenes from Genesis are painted, and on the north there are scenes from the Old Testament. The dome of the altar is full of painted seraphim. The painting also includes elements inspired by the reality of the place. Several icons on wood and glass, from the end of the fifteenth century, adorn the church. Of note are the scenes from the life cycle of St. Demetrius and St Nestor, topics habitual in the churches of Maramureș.
The Calinești Susani Church, dedicated to "The Assumption of Our Lady" was high in 1758. There is a new element in this church, the triconic foundation, a typical feature of Moldavia. The border that surrounds the church is decorated with vines twisted on vertical pylons. The porch is of polygonal shape and the nave is provided with side apses. Over the porch rise the bell tower, under which there is a gallery with arcades. Inside, only a few fragments of the mural painting, which was made by the painter Nicolae Cepschin in 1788, are preserved.
If you arrive at Călineşti, besides the two churches, you can also visit the Rogoaza archaeological site (a former settlement from the Bronze Age) and the two monuments that honor the heroes fallen in the two world wars. All this adds to the picturesque of the location and hospitality of the locals who keep with holiness their customs, traditions and harbor.
