A wonderful fairytale landscape, made up of green hills, mosaics of crops, traditional Transylvanian Saxon villages protected by fortified churches, age-old forests, and flower-covered meadows—these wonders can be admired by following hiking trails that extend for hundreds of kilometers across the hills.
For centuries, life here has been lived in harmony with nature, which is endowed with a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. Cascades of flowers and butterflies cover the green meadows, while clear streams run through breezy forests where deer and bears coexist alongside hundreds of songbirds, delighting the ear. A strong sense of peace, balance, and harmony emerges, like a piece of heaven.
The Saxon villages blend harmoniously with the natural landscape, naturally complementing the atmosphere with their archaic charm.
The entire area comprises seven protected sites at the European level, one protected area at the national level, and two of local interest. These places host 60% of Romania’s bird species, some of them rare, such as the black stork, the great and little egret, the red heron, and the whistling thrush. In addition, there are 600 species of butterflies, over 1,000 species of plants, and some of the largest areas of downy oak forests.
Over 250 kilometers of bike routes cross the site “Natura 2000 – Podișul Hârtibaciului-Târnava Mare.” The routes pass through villages and forests, reach the Sighișoara Medieval Citadel, and link important heritage sites such as Viscri, Saschiz, and the Breite area.
One of the entrance gates to the Transylvanian Hills is the village of Cincșor, in Brașov County, where there is also a mini-museum. Here, tourists can learn useful information about routes, places, sights, and events. They can also explore the “Story of the Transylvanian Hills” through interactive lessons and role-playing activities, gaining insight into how to interact with and protect nature.
For active tourists, eager for hiking and nature, the Transylvania’s Hills offer ideal conditions.
