The Rapsone Fortress: A Medieval Adventure in the Heart of Nature

A Realm of Legends and Natural Beauty

The Rapsone Fortress

The Rapsone Fortress

The Rapsone Fortress, situated in the picturesque landscape of the Târnava Mică Valley and Creanga Mare, perched atop a group of rocks, is a destination that combines mysterious history with spectacular nature. Although the exact origin of the fortress remains unknown, archaeological excavations in 1974 suggest it was built as a Szekler fortress between the 11th and 12th centuries.

A Journey to the Ruins of the Rapsone Fortress

The Rapsone Fortress, located just 6 km away, awaits to reveal its fascinating ruins. Even though the fortress has not been perfectly preserved, the surrounding natural landscape will take your breath away. The marked and easily accessible trail, now a forest road, leads you to the foot of the hill.

To reach the ruins, from the national road Praid-Gheorgheni, at kilometer 5, leave your car and head left along a country road. After about 2 km on foot, you will arrive at Varkapu, at the foot of the Rapsone Fortress, situated at an altitude of 905 meters. From here, three streams originate: Szilas, Rakottyas, and Iuhodul, adding a special charm to this adventure.

History and Mysteries of the Fortress

The fortress is located on a saddle at 962 meters in the Târnava Mică Valley, isolated from the rest of the plateau by two embankments and a ditch, which are no longer preserved on the north and south sides. Some sections are protected only by steep slopes.

With an irregular shape (115 x 41 m), the north and northeast parts of the fortress are protected by stone walls 1.8-1.9 meters thick, arranged trapezoidally and carved into the rock, preserved in some places up to a height of 1.7-1.8 meters. It is presumed that the entrance to the fortress was located in the northeast corner, and a well dating back to the 19th century is mentioned in documents.

Medieval ceramic materials, dated approximately between the 12th and 13th centuries, add further historical value to this fortress.
