Located near the town of Gura Humorului, in Suceava County, the monastery was founded in 1488 by Prince Stephen the Great. The church is dedicated to Saint George and is part of the group of churches in northern Moldavia included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Voroneț is particularly renowned for its exterior mural paintings, created in the 16th century. The frescoes cover the church façades and stand out through their composition, expressive figures and distinctive colours. Among them, the intense shade of blue became the defining feature of the monument and is known around the world as “Voroneț blue”.
One of the best-known representations is the Last Judgment, painted on the western façade of the church. The monumental composition depicts religious themes and beliefs characteristic of medieval Christianity and is regarded as one of the outstanding achievements of Moldavian religious painting.
The church preserves the architectural characteristics of the Moldavian style developed during the reign of Stephen the Great, while later additions reflect the transformations and works carried out during the 16th century.
The historical, architectural and artistic value of Voroneț Monastery has made it one of the enduring symbols of Bucovina. Together with the other painted churches of northern Moldavia, it provides an exceptional insight into the development of medieval religious art and culture in the region.
Today, Voroneț Monastery remains both an important place of worship and one of Bucovina’s principal cultural and tourist attractions, welcoming visitors interested in the history, spirituality and artistic heritage of this part of Romania.
