Sebastian Stan is now known around the world, particularly for his role as Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier in the Marvel universe. Before reaching Hollywood, however, his story began far from the major American film studios, in Constanța, Romania, where he was born on August 13, 1982.
His childhood was marked by several changes of country. At the age of eight, he moved with his mother, Georgeta Orlovschi, to Vienna. Four years later, they moved to the United States, settling in New York State. This transition would play an important role in his personal and artistic development.
In the United States, Stan gradually became more interested in acting. He studied at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts and also spent time at London’s prestigious Shakespeare’s Globe.
The early years of his career included roles in television and film. He appeared in productions such as The Covenant and Black Swan, as well as television series including Gossip Girl, Kings and Once Upon a Time. These projects gave him valuable experience and helped him gradually establish himself in the American entertainment industry.
The turning point in his career came in 2011, when Sebastian Stan was cast as Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger. The character would become one of the most important roles of his career and would take him through several productions within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He returned as Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, as well as in other Marvel productions, including the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The role introduced him to a global audience and brought him significant visibility in Hollywood.
At the same time, Stan sought to build a more diverse career beyond the Marvel franchise. He appeared in productions such as The Martian, Ricki and the Flash and I, Tonya. In the 2017 film I, Tonya, he portrayed Jeff Gillooly, taking on a role that was very different from his work in superhero films.
Television has also played an important role in his career. Stan appeared in productions such as Political Animals and Once Upon a Time, while in 2022 he portrayed musician Tommy Lee in the miniseries Pam & Tommy. The performance earned him an Emmy nomination and his first Golden Globe nomination.
In recent years, Stan’s career has increasingly demonstrated his desire to move beyond the image associated primarily with superhero films. In A Different Man, directed by Aaron Schimberg, Stan plays Edward, an aspiring actor whose life changes dramatically following a medical procedure involving his face.
The role allowed him to explore a complex character far removed from those that had made him famous with mainstream audiences. His performance earned him the 2025 Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
That same year, Stan also received a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Donald Trump in The Apprentice. These two projects marked another stage in his career, highlighting his growing involvement in dramatic and independent productions.
Although he has spent most of his life outside Romania, his origins remain an important part of his personal story. He was born in Constanța and left Romania as a child, continuing his journey first in Austria and later in the United States.
His story is also that of a child who left Romania and, through years of study and work, eventually reached some of the most prominent stages of the international film industry.
Today, Sebastian Stan is among the actors of Romanian origin who have built successful careers on the international stage. His journey has taken him from television to major Marvel productions and then towards independent cinema and dramatic roles that have brought some of the most significant recognition of his career.
From Constanța, Romania, to Hollywood, Sebastian Stan’s story has unfolded across several countries, stages and experiences, ultimately becoming an international success story.
