Romania’s Wine Routes: Vineyards and Wineries to Visit

From the rolling vineyards of Dealu Mare and the Târnave region to Drăgășani and Recaș, wine tourism offers travelers the chance to discover Romanian wines where they are produced

Romania’s Wine Routes: Vineyards and Wineries to Visit

Romania has a long winemaking tradition, spread across numerous regions of the country. Today, wine can also be a reason to travel, with vineyards, wineries, historic estates and rural landscapes creating routes where tastings are complemented by local stories and encounters with the people who produce the wine.

According to Romania’s official wine-growing classification, the country is divided into wine-growing regions, vineyards and wine-growing centers. Among the best-known areas are Târnave, Dealu Mare, Drăgășani, Recaș, Cotnari, Miniș-Măderat, Murfatlar and Ostrov.

Dealu Mare, one of Romania’s leading wine destinations

Located in the Subcarpathian area between Prahova and Buzău counties, Dealu Mare is one of Romania’s best-known wine regions. It is particularly associated with red wines, although local producers also make white, rosé and sparkling wines.

For travelers interested in wine tourism, SERVE Winery in Ceptura de Jos is one of the destinations worth considering. The winery welcomes visitors for organized tours and tastings, with advance reservations required. According to the producer, the estate is approximately one hour from Bucharest and offers visitors the opportunity to explore the winery and taste its wines.

Another destination in Dealu Mare is Budureasca Winery, located in Gura Vadului, Prahova County. Visitors can learn about the winemaking process, tour the winery and take part in tastings. These experiences are organized for groups and require advance booking.

Târnave, in the heart of Transylvania

The Târnave wine region lies in central Transylvania and includes wine-growing centers such as Blaj, Jidvei, Sighișoara and Mediaș.

One of the region’s attractions for wine travelers is the Jidvei estate, where winemaking is combined with the architectural heritage of Bethlen-Haller Castle. The estate offers visitors the opportunity to explore the vineyards and wineries and take part in wine-tasting experiences.

Bethlen-Haller Castle adds a cultural dimension to the journey, meaning that a visit to the area is not limited to wine production but also includes the discovery of a historic estate surrounded by vineyards.

Drăgășani, where wine meets heritage

The Drăgășani wine region in Vâlcea County is another important destination for wine tourism in Romania. One of the best-known places to visit is AVINCIS Estate – Vila Dobrușa.

The estate offers visitors the opportunity to combine wine tastings with tours of the winery and walks through the vineyards. The property includes the winery, the historic villa and landscaped grounds, while accommodation is also available for visitors wishing to stay longer.

Drăgășani can therefore become part of a wider journey through northern Oltenia, a region also known for its historic and cultural heritage.

Recaș and the wines of western Romania

In western Romania, the Recaș wine region is one of the country’s important wine-growing areas. It can easily be included in an itinerary starting from Timișoara and continuing towards the surrounding wine-growing communities.

Alongside wine tasting, a trip through this part of the country allows visitors to discover the rural landscape and villages of Banat. As with other Romanian wineries, visitors should check opening hours and booking requirements in advance, as access arrangements vary from one producer to another.

More than just wine

A wine route should not be seen simply as a succession of tastings. In many parts of Romania, wineries are connected with castles, manor houses, historic villages, local cuisine and rural landscapes.

At Jidvei, for example, a visit can combine Bethlen-Haller Castle with the surrounding vineyards and estate. At AVINCIS, the experience brings together Vila Dobrușa, the winery and the surrounding landscape. In Dealu Mare, wineries such as SERVE and Budureasca offer visitors the opportunity to discover the places where the wines are actually produced.

These experiences also provide an opportunity to discover Romanian grape varieties such as Fetească Neagră, Fetească Regală, Fetească Albă, Tămâioasă Românească and Negru de Drăgășani, alongside international varieties cultivated in different wine-growing regions.

How to plan a winery visit

Travelers planning a wine-focused trip through Romania should check in advance whether the winery welcomes visitors on the day of their planned visit. Many wineries organize tours and tastings exclusively by reservation.

It is advisable to check opening hours, the minimum number of participants, the duration of the tour and the tasting conditions before setting out. At SERVE, for example, tasting reservations must be made at least two days in advance, while Budureasca also requires advance booking. Jidvei likewise organizes vineyard and winery visits by reservation.

Romania therefore offers numerous opportunities for travelers who want to discover wine beyond the bottle. Dealu Mare, Târnave, Drăgășani, Recaș and the country’s other wine-growing areas can become starting points for journeys where gastronomy, heritage, nature and wine culture come together.
