Timisoara - European Capital of Culture in 2021 - is not just a simple title but a reward for the preservation of unique values in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment, where the dialogue between ethnic groups crystallized over time around the concept of brotherhood. "The mutual recognition and respect are the fundamental principles of the intercultural, multi-confessional and business communities of the city. Over 30 different cultures have lived here together for centuries: Romanians, Germans, Hungarians, Serbs, Croats, Italians, Spanish and Bulgarian."
Timisoara’s slogan in this competition is "Shine your light - Light up your city!". "We imagine an extraordinary journey from loneliness to membership, from the light through the darkness and way back, covering three theories that address the challenges with which Europe is facing today: people, places and connections.
Timisoara is the right place for start a strong and systematic cultural approach, in order to restore hope in troubled European communities. We focus on the public, on people, on citizens, voices - unheard, but not lost. We have a story to tell - that of a cosmopolitan city, a city that has resisted and then reinvented itself, at the borders of central and south-east Europe."
What does 2016 mean to Timisoara?
The city project as European Capital of Culture aims, firstly, to create a suitable environment for participatory tourism. Beyond the usual souvenirs and photos, the public will have a wide range of opportunities to interact with other tourists or locals. Culture will be everywhere, on the streets, squares, theatres, museums, galleries and other public spaces available.
Even the Bega channel will be redefined not only to facilitate the movement, but also for the organization of various events.
The project Timisoara European Capital of Culture 2021 will be guaranteed with public money, at least 123.7 million euro, plus private sector investment, which we will develop several services, such as hotels, catering, tourism, transport, local, etc.
Tourists will be able to reach Timisoara both by car and by plane. In this regard it should be said that the Timisoara "Traian Vuia" Airport will increase the number of flights by 2021 and there is a wide range of accommodation and it continues to grow. Travel agencies and transport companies from Timisoara will synchronize their activities with the program of the cultural project events.
Timisoara European Capital of Culture 2021 is "a title for life and not for a year!", stated Steve Green.
