With its unmistakable aroma of baked apples and cinnamon, this delicacy holds a special place in Romanian cuisine. Whether prepared for family gatherings, holidays, or simply for a quiet afternoon, apple pie remains one of the country's most beloved traditional recipes.
Over time, each region of Romania has added its own touch to this dessert. Some home cooks prefer delicate buttery pastry layers, while others choose a yeast-based dough. Yet the main ingredient remains the same: the apple, an affordable, healthy, and flavorful fruit.
Beyond its delicious taste, apple pie is also appreciated for its simplicity. It does not require sophisticated ingredients, and the result is always impressive. Served warm or cold, plain or dusted with vanilla sugar, it represents the perfect combination of tradition and comfort food.
Traditional Apple Pie Recipe
Ingredients for the Dough
500 g all-purpose flour
200 g butter or margarine
150 g sugar
2 eggs
100 ml sour cream
1 packet baking powder (about 10 g)
A pinch of salt
Ingredients for the Filling
1 kg apples
100 g sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 packet vanilla sugar
2 tablespoons breadcrumbs (optional)
Instructions
In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Add the cold butter and work it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Add the sugar, eggs, and sour cream, then knead until a smooth dough forms.
Divide the dough into two equal portions and refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
Peel and grate the apples. Mix them with the sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla sugar.
Roll out the first sheet of dough and place it into a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the dough to absorb excess moisture.
Spread the apple filling evenly over the base.
Cover with the second sheet of dough and prick it in several places with a fork.
Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (356°F) for 35–40 minutes, or until golden brown.
Allow the pie to cool, dust with powdered sugar if desired, and serve.
