Departing from Vișeu de Sus, the train travels for dozens of kilometers through dense forests, narrow valleys, and spectacular landscapes near the Maramureș Mountains Natural Park.
The forest railway was built in the early 20th century to transport timber harvested from the Maramureș Mountains. With its narrow-gauge track of 760 mm, typical of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, the railway quickly became one of the region’s most important forestry transport systems.
Unlike most European forest railways, which were dismantled after World War II and replaced by road transport, the Vaser Valley line has remained in operation almost continuously. Today, the railway is still used both for forestry activities and for tourism, giving it a rare level of authenticity that is difficult to find elsewhere in Europe.
After the year 2000, the Mocănița railway underwent an extensive restoration and preservation process supported by international organizations and railway heritage enthusiasts. Several historic steam locomotives were restored and returned to service, while the railway station in Vișeu de Sus was modernized to accommodate the growing number of visitors from around the world.
Today, tourist trains operate depending on the season and weather conditions, with most departures taking place between spring and autumn. The main tourist route reaches the Paltin area, where visitors can enjoy a meal break and relax in the middle of nature.
A journey on the Mocănița is much more than a simple train ride. It is a trip back in time, where the steam locomotive, the smell of burning wood, and the slow rhythm of the railway recreate the atmosphere of historic Maramureș.
For many travelers, the Mocănița on the Vaser Valley is considered one of the most beautiful railway experiences in Europe and one of the emblematic attractions of authentic Romania.
