Every year on June 14, World Blood Donor Day is observed as an opportunity to recognize the contribution of voluntary blood donors and to highlight the importance of blood in saving human lives. The date was chosen in honor of the Austrian physician and biologist Karl Landsteiner, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 and is widely regarded as the father of modern transfusion medicine.
At the beginning of the 20th century, blood transfusions were extremely risky procedures. Although physicians had observed that some transfusions were successful while others caused severe reactions or even death, the reason for these differences remained unknown. The lack of a scientific explanation significantly limited treatment options and reduced survival chances in many medical situations.
In 1901, Karl Landsteiner made a discovery that would fundamentally transform medicine. He demonstrated that human blood can be classified into distinct groups based on specific characteristics found on red blood cells. Landsteiner initially identified blood groups A, B, and O, while the AB group was later described by his collaborators. Together, the ABO and Rh systems laid the foundation for modern transfusion medicine and contributed to the development of surgery, organ transplantation, and treatments for numerous hematological disorders.
Today, blood and blood products are indispensable in the treatment of accident victims, patients undergoing complex surgical procedures, individuals diagnosed with cancer, and those suffering from chronic blood diseases. In many situations, a timely blood transfusion can mean the difference between life and death.
Despite the remarkable advances in medicine and technology, blood cannot yet be artificially produced on a large scale to meet hospital demands. For this reason, voluntary blood donation remains the only safe and reliable source of blood for patients in need of treatment.
World Blood Donor Day is not only a tribute to Karl Landsteiner’s discovery but also a recognition of the generosity of millions of donors who help save lives every year. Each donation can assist multiple patients and support the functioning of healthcare systems worldwide.
