Buzău Land – Romania’s UNESCO Geopark of Mysteries and Natural Wonders

Discover one of Romania’s most fascinating destinations.

Buzău Land – Romania’s UNESCO Geopark of Mysteries and Natural Wonders

Hidden among the hills and mountains of Buzău County, Buzău Land (Ținutul Buzăului) is a destination that impresses visitors with its spectacular landscapes, unique geological phenomena, and rich cultural heritage. In 2022, the area was included in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, a recognition that confirms its exceptional international value.

Buzău Land is a place where nature, history, and legends intertwine in a remarkable way, offering visitors experiences that are difficult to find elsewhere in Europe.

The geopark is located in the northwestern part of Buzău County and covers approximately 1,000 square kilometers. The area includes several communes and traditional villages, preserving the authenticity of Romanian rural life.

Its landscape is remarkably diverse, ranging from rolling hills and ancient forests to rocky cliffs, dramatic plateaus, and rare geological formations.

The region’s most famous attraction is the Mud Volcanoes, a rare natural phenomenon in Europe.

Natural gases rise to the surface through layers of clay and salty water, creating small mud cones that erupt continuously. The result is a spectacular landscape that resembles the surface of Mars.

Every year, the site attracts thousands of tourists and photographers from around the world, making it one of Romania’s most photographed natural attractions.

Another impressive geological phenomenon can be found in the village of Ulmet.

The Trovants are unusual stone formations shaped by natural processes over millions of years. Their distinctive appearance has inspired numerous local legends, which is why they are often referred to as “living stones.”

Their varied shapes and sizes transform the area into a true open-air geological museum.

Near the village of Lopătari, visitors can observe one of Romania’s most spectacular natural phenomena.

Natural gases escaping through cracks in the ground ignite spontaneously, creating flames that can burn continuously. Known as the Living Fires (Focurile Vii), this phenomenon is rare even on a European scale.

Viewed at sunset or after dark, these flames create a fascinating spectacle.

Buzău Land is also home to some of Romania’s most mysterious historical monuments.

In the Aluniș–Nucu area, visitors can discover churches, hermitages, and dwellings carved directly into the rock, used by monks and hermits for centuries.

These cave settlements provide a unique insight into the spiritual life and history of the region.

In addition to its geological attractions, the region offers numerous hiking trails that cross forests, hills, and spectacular mountain landscapes.

Visitors can discover:

• Ancient forests;

• Impressive panoramic viewpoints;

• Traditional villages;

• Natural springs;

• Authentic rural landscapes.

The area is ideal for photography, nature observation, and exploring lesser-known destinations.

Beyond its natural wealth, Buzău Land preserves many local traditions.

Visitors can experience traditional crafts, authentic customs, and regional cuisine. The hospitality of the local people adds to the charm of a region that has preserved its identity through the centuries.

Buzău Land is more than just a geopark. It is a place where geology, nature, culture, and legends come together to create a truly memorable travel experience.

From the Mud Volcanoes and the Trovants of Ulmet to the Living Fires and the rock-hewn settlements, every corner of the region tells a fascinating story. For travelers seeking authentic experiences and lesser-known destinations, Buzău Land is one of Romania’s most surprising treasures.
