Its waters cascade down a series of rocky terraces from a height of approximately 90 meters (295 feet), creating a breathtaking natural spectacle admired in every season.
The waterfall's name comes from a local legend. According to the story, a herd of wild horses, chased by bears, sought refuge on the nearby cliffs. In a desperate attempt to escape, the horses leaped into the abyss, and the place became known as Horse Waterfall. Although this tale belongs to local folklore, it adds a unique charm and mystery to this remarkable destination.
Reaching the waterfall is relatively easy. Many visitors take the chairlift from the Borșa Tourist Complex to the mountain plateau, followed by a pleasant 20–30-minute walk along a well-marked trail. Hiking enthusiasts can also choose longer routes starting directly from the resort, enjoying spectacular views of the Rodna Mountains along the way.
Spring and early summer are the best times to visit, as melting snow significantly increases the waterfall's flow, revealing its full power and beauty. In autumn, the surrounding forests turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red, creating a truly picturesque landscape. During winter, the frozen cascades and striking ice formations transform the area into a magical wonderland.
A visit to Horse Waterfall can easily be combined with other nearby attractions, such as Lake Știol and the hiking trails leading to the highest peaks of the Rodna Mountains. The fresh mountain air, peaceful surroundings, and stunning scenery make this one of the most beloved natural destinations in the Maramureș region.
