Stretching for approximately 2.9 kilometers, the gorge was carved over millions of years by the Hășdate River through the limestone formations of the Trascău Mountains, creating towering cliffs that rise more than 300 meters in some places.
Because of its outstanding geological, scenic, and biological value, Turda Gorge was declared a protected nature reserve in 1938 and is now part of the European Natura 2000 network.

Turda Gorge was formed through the continuous erosion of limestone by the Hășdate River over millions of years. The result is a dramatic canyon featuring steep cliffs, towering limestone formations, caves, natural arches, and remarkable geological structures.
More than 60 caves have been identified within the reserve. Among the best known are Fortress Cave (Peștera Cetății), Hungarian Cave (Peștera Ungurească), and Balica's Cave (Peștera lui Balica). Although most of them are relatively small, they are of considerable scientific and speleological interest.
Exceptional biodiversity
Turda Gorge is home to one of Romania's richest concentrations of plant and animal life. More than 1,000 plant species have been recorded here, including numerous rare and protected species. Among them are rock pinks, lady's slipper orchids (Cypripedium calceolus), various wild orchid species, and many endemic plants adapted to limestone habitats.
The gorge also supports an impressive variety of wildlife. Its steep cliffs provide ideal nesting sites for birds of prey such as the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), and the common raven (Corvus corax). The surrounding forests are inhabited by roe deer, red foxes, European badgers, pine martens, bats, reptiles, amphibians, and numerous invertebrate species.

Legends and history
Over the centuries, Turda Gorge has inspired numerous local legends. One of the most famous tells of King Ladislaus I of Hungary, who was pursued by invading Cumans. According to legend, God split the mountain in two, allowing the king and his army to escape through the newly formed gorge.
Archaeological discoveries reveal that the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Evidence from the Neolithic period and the Dacian era confirms the long-standing human presence in this remarkable landscape.
How to get there
Turda Gorge is located approximately 15 kilometers from the city of Turda and around 35 kilometers from Cluj-Napoca, making it easily accessible by car. There are two main entrances to the reserve, with the most frequently used access point being through the village of Petreștii de Jos.
Visitors have access to parking areas, information points, and well-marked hiking trails, making the reserve suitable for both day trips and longer holidays in the Apuseni Mountains.
Visitor recommendations
To help preserve this fragile ecosystem, visitors are encouraged to remain on marked trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and leave no litter behind. Proper hiking footwear is recommended, as sections of the trail may become slippery after rainfall.
Spring and early summer are generally considered the best seasons to visit, when the vegetation is at its most vibrant and weather conditions are ideal for outdoor activities.
