Founded on the initiative of Prince Nicolae Mavrocordat, the monastery developed into an important religious and cultural centre before disappearing during the final years of Romania’s communist regime.
Construction of the complex began in 1716, during Nicolae Mavrocordat’s first reign in Wallachia. Dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the complex was developed in several stages and continued during the reigns of his son, Constantin Mavrocordat. The monastery was consecrated on September 13/24, 1723, in the presence of the prince, his family, members of the court and senior clergy.
Located on Văcărești Hill, southeast of the Bucharest of that period, the monastery covered approximately 18,000 square metres. At the centre of the complex stood the main church, surrounded by the princely residence, the Chapel of Saint Nicholas, the abbot’s residence, monastic cells, kitchens and the bell tower. The church was more than 30 metres high and featured a large porch and massive stone columns, reflecting the Brâncovenesc architectural tradition.
Văcărești was not only a religious site. The complex also became an important cultural centre, housing a printing press, a Greek school and a valuable library. The Bucharest Municipality Museum describes it as one of the most significant architectural ensembles of the first half of the 18th century and places it within the tradition of post-Brâncovenesc art.
The history of the complex was marked by numerous changes. Over the centuries, the monastery was affected by fires and earthquakes, while after 1848 the site was transformed into a place of detention. Among those imprisoned there were Nicolae Bălcescu, the Golescu brothers, C. A. Rosetti and Gheorghe Magheru. Later, the complex was used as a penitentiary and also held political prisoners.
The earthquake of March 4, 1977, caused further damage. At the same time, archaeological research and restoration projects were being carried out. During the 1970s, extensive archaeological investigations were undertaken, while important parts of the complex had either been restored or were undergoing restoration.
Despite its status as a historic monument, the fate of Văcărești Monastery was decided during the 1980s. Demolition took place in several stages. In 1984, the crosses were removed, followed later by the towers. Architects, historians and academics made efforts to save the monument, but these initiatives could not prevent the destruction of the complex. The existence of Văcărești Monastery came to an end on December 15, 1986.
Only fragments of the monastery’s mural paintings survived. Of the more than 2,000 square metres of frescoes that once decorated the church, approximately 120 square metres were recovered in the form of extracted and restored fragments. Some of these are now part of the collections of the Bucharest Municipality Museum.
Today, Văcărești Monastery is no longer part of Bucharest’s urban landscape. Its history can nevertheless be reconstructed through photographs, historical documents, archaeological research and the surviving fragments of its frescoes. Its story remains one of the most striking reminders of Bucharest’s lost architectural heritage.
