Iulia Hasdeu - a legend situated between two worlds

On 14 November 1869, in Bucharest, was born Iulia Hasdeu – a genius child, an enlightened spirit, a destiny prematurely broken!

His father, Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu (one of the greatest personalities of the Romanian culture), idolized her right from birth. Iulia’s genius is looming since the earliest infancy. When she was 2 years old she already knew the letters and learned French, at 2 and a half years old she was reading and reciting poems. At the age of 4 she knew to write, at 5 she was composing poems. At 8 years old, because of her higher performance compared with her colleagues, she was allowed to give all primary school exams. She knew French and had some knowledge of English and German.

At 11 years old graduated secondary education, then the Conservatory and at only 16 years old she was accepted at the Sorbonne, thus becoming the first woman from Romania who studied at this prestigious university. At the university she manages to impress the teachers with her knowledge, intelligence and creativity.

Besides all this, Iulia had a special sensitivity which flowed abundantly in poetry, song and painting. She had a disturbing voice of a mezzo soprano. In Paris she continued the singing and painting lessons. She studied everything she could about French language and culture and continued to write poems and prose in French.

She began to prepare her doctoral thesis on „The Romanian folk philosophy: the logic, the psychology, the metaphysics, the ethics and the theodicy”. How could a child so divinely gifted not to seek the problematic of existential, philosophical, theological and spiritual matters.

Unfortunately, the destiny of this genius was crushed by a premature death. At 17 years old became ill with tuberculosis and on September 28, year 1888  she died just at 19 years old, leaving behind an unfinished opera. His father managed to collect and publish posthumously two volumes of poetry and one of prose. Hachette and Socec Publishing Houses hosted the appearance in 1889, of the three volumes of the collection Oeuvres Posthumes.

Among the writings of Julia, beside a real diary, scattered through several notebooks, among the themes of school, on the edges of pages with poems, there were found several notes, which formed an unusual diary.

The diary from the future - a dream of 100 years of living in advance

Her interest in metaphysics and spirituality are discovered, especially after her death. Iulia lived two lives, which were transposed in two diaries: one real and one fictional.

In the fictional diary, her life unfolds anticipatory flowing until 1971. It was not a predicted life or a lived life, but it was a desired life, perhaps what ought to be! In the fictional life she married Prince Ferdinand, who became king of Romania (in reality he became King in 1914). Then she described the life spent with Ferdinand in the Kingdom of Romania, where the peace and prosperity lasts for 100 years.

The story goes until 1971, when Iulia-queen would die at the age of 101 years. At the end of the diary there is the following note: „The Queen Iulia died on May 21, 1971, at 11.20 am, at 101 years 6 months and 6 days ...”.

In the real diary, through the last note in September 1888 addressed to her mother, she predicts her own death: „Mother, I leave you forever. I will not see you again. I will acquire my existence under an unknown name. I'll rich without help from anyone, on my own, the glory which I dreamed.”
