Jose Ortega y Gasset once said that that any trip is in fact a hunt for landscapes. The same could be said about the Eco marathon organized in Moieciu de Sus. This is probably the reason behind the unusual popularity of the event that takes place around an ordinary village in Transylvania. The natural beauty that surrounds the village, as well as the neatly-chosen paths which allow the exploration of these beauties, have transformed a simple marathon race into an unforgettable experience in the midst of nature.
Thus, since its first edition in 2009, the number of annual participants at the EcoMarathon has tripled, and it would have been even higher if organizers had not imposed a participation limit, so as to ensure that the event would be conducted in optimal conditions. As a result, in 2018, the marathon was attended by 2300 people, of which no fewer than 600 were children between 2-17 years old. Those present came from 24 different countries, some travelling tens of thousands of miles (coming from the US, Australia, or South Africa) just to end up running a few dozen miles in Moieciu de Sus.
The event, which took place on May 5th, covered three distinct races, depending on preparedness and age.
EcoMarathon is a marathon competition in the true sense of the word, being destined for trained runners and those who want to overcome their limits. During the 42 km race, the runners have to face a difference in altitude of approximately 2300 meters, both the start and finish of the event being at Moieciu de Sus.
EcoCross is for those who prefer shorter distances or who have recently started running and want to change their lifestyle, to become more active. It is a 14 km race with a 600 meter difference in altitude, the start and arrival also being at Moieciu de Sus.
EcoKids is a contest for children. Depending on the age category, they are asked to run distances, all starting and finishing at Moieciu de Sus.
