Local administration documents indicate that the commune of Bistrița-Bârgăului is approximately 27 kilometres from the city of Bistrița, while the road distance to Colibița is approximately 40 kilometres, depending on the exact starting point and the route chosen.
From Bistrița, the route follows the Bârgău Valley towards Prundu Bârgăului and then continues towards Bistrița-Bârgăului and Colibița. From Vatra Dornei, access is via DN17, through Tihuța Pass and the Bârgău Valley, before ascending towards the lake.
