The Russian Church in Bucharest

The Russian Church in Bucharest

The church dedicated to "St. Nicholas ", draws around it not only Orthodox believers, but also foreign tourists impressed by the architectural style, unique in Romania.

The construction was built between years 1905-1909 on the initiative of the Russian Ambassador, Mihail Nicolaevici Giers, with the contribution of the Imperial Court of Russia and the consent of the Royal House of Romania, being destined to the Russian embassy staff and other Russian believers when in Bucharest. The construction works were carried out by Russian and Italian workers, according to the architectural plan of V.A. Preobrajenski.

Architecturally and artistically, this jewel, which has become an art monument, represents a landmark for the Russian churches of the twentieth century, being among the latest developments of this type, because with the revolution of 1917 the construction of the Russian churches was interrupted brutally. The façades, inspired by the Russian and Georgian designs, made of yellow-pink apparent brick, richly ornamented with floral and geometric models and medallions with saints and angels, cannot but attract the attention of the passers.

The entrance door, framed by striae, tendrils and spirals carved in stone, attracts as a magnet and opens the way towards a oasis of peaceful, art and spirituality, where you can reset and admire, where you can upload energy and spirituality.

The interior painting in oil, signed by the Russian painter Vasiliev, wears the imprint of the old Byzantine style and the painting style of Mount Athos. The iconostasis, carved in wood and gilded, was painted by Viktor Vasnetov, being inspired by the model from Cathedral "St. Archangels" in Kremlin.

Currently, in the church, as a unique and salutary fact, the spiritual program is intertwined harmoniously with a program of cultural activities. In this way, the spiritual power is intertwined with the cultural and artistic force and creates a perfect communion, in which whoever enters, believer or not, can receive abundantly the artistic and spiritual gift of this place.
