After the midnight service, when the faithful received the news of the Resurrection through the words “Christ is risen!”, Sunday begins under the sign of light, hope, and renewal.
Easter is not only the most important celebration of Christianity, but also a moment when traditions, faith, and family life intertwine harmoniously. After the seven weeks of fasting and the intense period of Holy Week, this day marks the victory of life over death and of good over evil.
Easter morning begins, in many families, with washing the face using water in which a red egg and a coin are placed. This custom symbolizes health, beauty, and prosperity for the year to come. It is also said that it is good to keep the Resurrection candle lit when you arrive home and to make the sign of the cross with it above the door, for the protection of the household.
A central moment of the day is the Easter meal, around which the family gathers. Traditionally, it begins with the tapping of red eggs, accompanied by the Easter greeting:
— “Christ is risen!”
— “Truly, He is risen!”
On the table are traditional dishes: red eggs, drob (a traditional dish made from lamb offal), roast lamb, cozonac (a traditional sweet bread), and pască (a traditional Easter cheese pastry). Each of these has its own meaning, connected to the celebration and Christian symbolism, as well as to the idea of abundance and togetherness.
In some regions of the country, there is a custom for people to wear new clothes on Easter Day, symbolizing a new beginning. It is also said that it is good to spend this day in peace, with loved ones, avoiding conflicts or negative thoughts.
Romanian traditions also preserve folk beliefs related to this day: it is said that those born on Easter Day will have good luck in life, and those who respect the customs will be protected and blessed throughout the year.
Thus, Easter Sunday is not just a continuation of the night of the Resurrection, but a day of spiritual fulfillment, shared joy, and inner renewal. It is the moment when the light received on the holy night becomes light in people’s hearts.
Christ is risen!
