A time for meeting the most famous experts in the Romanian wine industry at Vinvest, International and National Wine Salon. Among glasesses, stands and wine samples it took place the 14th edition of the National Contest of Wines and Alcoholic Drinks on 17th -18th April in Timisoara.

Ph.D. Ioan Nămolosanu is a professor at the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest, a recognized researcher in the wine industry with over 170 published works and a member of ADAR (the Association of Authorized Tasters in Romania).

-What is new at Vinvest XVIth edition 2019?

- Certainly every year we have new wines, even if some companies are the same exhibiting or bringing samples into the contest. They come with novelties: for example, new and interesting packaging. Some companies have been concerned about these marketing aspects, which tells us that people no longer want just to consume the products but consuming it in a certain way. It increases quality, which means that we have to do with better connoisseurs of wine and its cultural role.

Diversity has now emerged and we have seen some samples with special wines (those wines that has some additional processing, for example, effervescent wines, flavored wines such as Pelin). This year, aromatic sparkling wine and new varieties appeared. It seeks to broaden the group of consumers.

Concening the wine varieties if a few years ago we talked about Shiraz varieties as unique, it is now equal the Merlot variety. There are many companies that brought to the Salon Shiraz, Chardonay, Sauvignon varieties. The proportion of Feteasca Regala or Feteasca Alba has decreased even if there are pure Romanian varieties, but producers respond to consumer demand.

-Have the consumer`s habits changed over time?

- I think so. I, myself, change my preferences and I am smiling now because in my youth I almost did not conceive of consuming white wine without "sprit". At a meeting with colleagues in France, a rarity before the 90's when they saw me drinking wine with water, they were shocked and I explained that it was a cultural custom. Today I could say that especially among the youngsters this „custom” almost disappeared, which is a good thing. We were producers of white wines in the proportion of 80% of Romania's wine production were white wines before the 90's, the red wine was just exported. Now, even at the traditional Romanian events, besides the  white wines, the rose or red wines are consumed too. The same goes for the exhibitors: from white, dry wines to sweet and semi - sweet wines.
