Teodor Wine Cellar "a wine sent from heaven"

The hills of Sătmar from the North-Western part of Romania, at the intersection between the regions of Crișana and Maramureș, gained its recognition thanks to the Commune of Beltiug, an area with a rich history and hardworking people.

The wine with geographical indication (IG) Sătmar Hills was brought back to the public attention after a period of anonymity through a unique story. It is said that during King Ladislaus the Ist from Hungary, in 1085, after a battle with the Petchenegs (Turks), the king arrived on the hills of Satmar and asked for a glass of water. The locals served the king with a pumpkin filled with wine and the king, amused, asked what variety of pumpkin was served.

In the Hungarian language "bél" means ”content” and "tek" ”pumpkin”, from which the name of the village of Beltiug came from. In the 18th Century this region was called "the Residence of Bachus" and the colonization of Saxons brought new varieties of grapes to the area. Currently, in the localities Beltiug, Rătești and Ardud are hundreds of 2 or 3 level cellars, carved in the hills.

In the wine-growing area The Hills of Crisana and Maramures  - Sătmar Hills there is Teodor Wine Cellar in Rătești village, the commune of Beltiug in Satu - Mare County. The winery has an area of 12 ha and produces 40 000 liters of wine annually. The cultivated grape varieties are: Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling de Rhin, Tămâioasă Românească, Pink Traminer, Cadarcă, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Fetească Neagră.

The Teodor Wine Cellar is proud of two exceptional wine collections: Teodor Wine Cellar and Adeodatus. Teodor Wine Cellar won in 2018 the Silver Medal with Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc - 2017 at the Pistonul de Aur Contest in Brăila, the Bronze Medal at the  "Stories with Romanian wines" Competition in 2018 from Oradea city with Sauvignon Blanc - 2017.
