Blajini Easter: customs and traditions

On Monday, April 20, believers across the country mark Blajini Easter, an important holiday dedicated to the commemoration of the departed.

Blajini Easter: customs and traditions

Although it is not listed as a public holiday in the official calendar, the bustle in cemeteries and the memorial services turn this day into a major social and spiritual event.

A bridge between worlds
Blajini Easter, traditionally celebrated on the Monday after Thomas Sunday, reflects the popular belief that the news of Christ’s Resurrection reaches only now the “Blajini” — the souls of the departed, described in legends as gentle and pure beings who live “at the edges of the world.”

If Sunday was dedicated to the certainty of faith through the Apostle Thomas, Monday is dedicated to communion. It is said that, through the offerings brought to the graves, the living “sit at the table” with their loved ones who are no longer physically among them.

Rituals and blessed offerings
On the morning of April 20, in most rural areas as well as in large cities, cemeteries become the center of community life. The ritual includes several essential elements:

Priests conduct collective or individual memorial services.

Food packages containing red eggs, colac (traditional bread), pască, and wine are distributed. In some regions, it is customary to set long tables after the service, where all those present are invited, regardless of their social status.

An old tradition says that housewives throw eggshells from red eggs into running water, so that they may float to the dwellings of the Blajini, thus announcing to them the great celebration of Easter.

Social significance
Beyond its mystical aspect, Blajini Easter remains an important factor of social cohesion. It is a time when families return to their native villages, clean the graves of their grandparents and great-grandparents, and reaffirm their connection to their roots.

“It is not a day of mourning, but one of remembrance and commemoration, of inner peace,” explain ethnologists. In an increasingly digitalized world, this “Easter of the dead” offers a moment of revelation and reflection on the continuity of life and on life and death in general.
