After having gained European or even global notoriety in 2007 along with the title of European Capital of Culture, Sibiu took a new step forward in terms of tourism. The European Gastronomic Region title awarded to the entire county is aimed at bringing a new dimension to the attractiveness of the city and the surrounding villages and communes. In fact, the culinary traditions of the rural area, where Romanian dishes are intertwined with German ones, have had great influence in acquiring this title, especially since the ingredients used for these dishes come directly from the people in the area.
The European Gastronomic Region title obtained does not represent an easy task because throughout 2019 Sibiu, as a county, will have to promote the dishes specific to the region and organize different events in which the they will be presented and prepared for as many people as possible. To be sure of success, the authorities in Sibiu have already begun work, anticipating the organization of at least 20 gastronomic and culinary events in 2018.
In addition to the already traditional Street Food Festival (undergoing in all of Romania), Gastronomic Transylvania or Wine-fest, the authorities also prepared a craft beer festival (again, present throughout the entire country) and an additional 14 events that contain a gastro component, in the form of workshops, jam sessions, culinary demonstrations or tastings. The emphasis is on organic products from farmers in the region, and this chain linking the region's land with what's on the plate will be the focal point of events and initiatives in 2019.
