Stefanesti – Marcea Winery

The vineyard from the Stefanesti area, Argeș County has a rich history dating back to 330 BC., comments were found in the chronicles of the Greek historian Diodorus Siculus and then mentioned in the Vlachian chronicles of 1388. Since 1959, when The Stefanesti Horti – Viticultural Experimental House was established, it reached its peak, attained over 1400 hectares of vineyards and its production was predominant oriented towards white wines, coming from varieties such as Fetească Albă or Sauvignon.

After several transformations of the house, especially after the revolution of 1989, this area entered into decline and into oblivion. Brothers Silviu and Eugen Procopiu, together with their friend Cosmin Smădu, decided in 2010 to revive the tradition of viticulture on their native lands and planted 25 hectares of new vines on the Marcea Plateau, a famous area that belonged to the writer Liviu Rebreanu in 1930. DOC Ștefănești was on the verge to disappear from the Romanian wine map but only the passion of the small winery owners saved this famous wine area.

Wine production started in 2013 and in 2016 they managed to build a new wine cellar in the heart of the Marcea Vineyard. The cultivated grape varieties are: Fetească Albă, Tămâioasă Românescă, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Rhin Riesling, Fetească Neagră, Merlot și Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery's brands are: Sumedru, Marcea, Truda Fanny.

Sumedru range is a wine created for events, red or white varieties and its name symbolically recreates the fire of Sumedru, celebrated in the Romanian traditional calendar on 26 October and marks the beginning of the winter. It is a wine that "lights" the fire and cast away the "coldness" between people.

Marcea is a top range wine and its name bear the name of the Marcea Hills, the highest hills in the Stefanesti DOC that emphasize the terroir touch of the wine. The labels designed by Silviu Antone reproduce the famous mansions of the Stefanesti Hills. Interestingly, the labels placed side by side in a certain order play the story in pictures of the Stefanesti Hills.

Truda Fanny is a wine with tradition, dating from the time of the writer Liviu Rebreanu who designed a fine and special wine dedicated to his wife, Fanny. Fanny Truda range is a Premium wine, produced in a limited edition of 2035 bottles, in white or red varieties in which one may feel the winemaker's "labor" in creating a special product.
