The Royal Road – Transalpina vs. Transfăgărășan

Two Carpathian legends, one question: which one would you choose?

The Royal Road – Transalpina vs. Transfăgărășan

Some roads simply take you from one destination to another. Others change the way you see the world. In Romania, two mountain highways have long outgrown their role as scenic routes to become true symbols of freedom, adventure, and breathtaking natural beauty: Transalpina, known as the King's Road, and the Transfăgărășan, the spectacular highway that has captivated travelers from around the globe.

Year after year, hundreds of thousands of Romanian and international visitors set out on an unforgettable journey through clouds, hairpin bends, and alpine peaks, all searching for the answer to one seemingly simple question: Which road is more beautiful?

The answer?

It all depends on what you're looking for.

Transalpina – The Road That Touches the Sky

At an altitude of 2,145 meters (7,037 feet), Transalpina is the highest road in Romania. Also known as the King's Road, legend has it that the route was modernized during the reign of King Carol II and officially inaugurated in the 1930s.

But the real magic begins once you reach the alpine zone.

For miles, the forests disappear, giving way to a breathtaking landscape of alpine meadows, rocky ridges, and rolling mountain peaks stretching endlessly toward the horizon. Here, the sky feels closer than anywhere else, creating the sensation that you're driving above the world itself.

This is not a road that impresses through drama.

It captivates through serenity.

Here, you don't chase photographs. You stop the engine, step out of the car, and simply listen to the wind.

Transfăgărășan – The Highway That Cuts Through the Mountains

If Transalpina is poetry, the Transfăgărășan is an adventure novel.

Built between 1970 and 1974, crossing the spectacular Făgăraș Mountains, the road climbs to 2,042 meters (6,699 feet), winding through tunnels, viaducts, and countless hairpin turns that have earned worldwide fame.

Few images represent Romania more powerfully than the breathtaking panorama near Bâlea Lake, where the road snakes dramatically through the mountain landscape.

It's no coincidence that the famous British television show Top Gear described it as one of the greatest driving roads in the world.

And it's hard to disagree.

Every corner seems designed for photography.

Every kilometer reveals a new surprise.

Waterfalls, glacial lakes, ancient forests, and towering cliffs transform the journey into a continuous spectacle.

Behind the Wheel

These two legendary roads offer entirely different driving experiences.

Transalpina is wide, open, and wonderfully relaxing. Its sweeping curves and endless panoramas make it the perfect route for travelers who enjoy slow drives and breathtaking scenery.

The Transfăgărășan, on the other hand, demands your full attention. Its countless hairpin bends, dramatic elevation changes, and heavy summer traffic can turn the drive into an exhilarating challenge.

If you love driving, adrenaline comes as part of the journey.

Landscapes That Tell Stories

Comparing these two roads is difficult precisely because they offer such different experiences.

On Transalpina, it's all about light, open spaces, and the overwhelming feeling of infinity.

On the Transfăgărășan, nature takes on a far more dramatic character.

The mountains rise steeper, the valleys plunge deeper, and every turn feels like a scene from an epic film.

One inspires peace.

The other stirs excitement.

What You'll Discover Along the Way

Transalpina serves as a gateway to authentic mountain villages, traditional shepherds' huts, and spectacular hiking trails through the Parâng and Șureanu Mountains. During the summer months, travelers encounter grazing sheep, sample locally made cheeses, and experience a side of Romania that has remained remarkably untouched by time.

Along the Transfăgărășan, iconic attractions await around nearly every corner: Bâlea Lake, Bâlea Waterfall, Vidraru Dam, Poenari Fortress, and numerous alpine hiking trails that attract outdoor enthusiasts from across Europe.

It is a rare combination of extraordinary natural beauty and fascinating historical landmarks.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Both roads are open only for a few months each year, depending on weather conditions.

The ideal travel season runs from June through September, when both highways are fully accessible and the alpine scenery is at its most spectacular.

Early mornings offer the best light for photography while also providing the quietest roads before traffic begins to build.
