Gheorghe Pănculescu, the Romanian Engineer Who May Have Inspired the Construction of the Eiffel Tower

When people think of the Eiffel Tower, they immediately associate it with Paris, Gustave Eiffel, and the 1889 Universal Exposition.

However, behind one of the world’s most iconic monuments lies a lesser-known story connected to a Romanian engineer: Gheorghe Pănculescu.

Even today, his name remains largely unfamiliar to the general public, yet several historical accounts and documents suggest that Pănculescu’s technical contribution may have played an important role in the construction of the famous French landmark.

Born in Romania during the 19th century, Gheorghe Pănculescu studied engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of Zurich, one of Europe’s most prestigious technical schools. After completing his studies, he came into contact with Gustave Eiffel, partly thanks to a recommendation from the Romanian poet Vasile Alecsandri, a respected cultural figure in France at the time.

Eiffel was reportedly impressed by the young Romanian engineer’s expertise, particularly his understanding of material resistance and innovative construction methods. After a period of collaboration in France, Pănculescu returned to Romania, where he became involved in the construction of the Ploiești–Predeal railway line, considered one of the most difficult infrastructure projects of its era.

It was during this project that the Romanian engineer developed a revolutionary rapid-assembly technique. His method involved prefabricating and assembling railway components alongside the track, significantly reducing construction time. Thanks to this innovative system, a project initially estimated to take five years was completed in approximately one year.

The efficiency of the method attracted Gustave Eiffel’s attention, leading the French engineer to travel personally to Romania, near Vălenii de Munte, to observe the technique created by his Romanian colleague. According to several historical sources, the two engineers discussed the possibility of adapting this modular system to the construction of an unprecedented metal structure: the future Eiffel Tower.

Many historians believe that this rapid assembly concept may have contributed to the completion of the tower in just two years, two months, and five days — an extraordinary achievement for such a massive structure in the late 19th century.

Additional support for this theory appears in technical writings attributed to Gustave Eiffel, including the document “Communication sur les travaux de la tour de 300 mètres,” in which Pănculescu’s construction method is reportedly mentioned. Although French historians continue to debate the extent of the Romanian engineer’s involvement, many researchers consider it plausible that Eiffel drew inspiration from his colleague’s innovations.

There is also a longstanding story claiming that some of the steel used in the tower’s construction came from Romania, which at the time possessed important metallurgical resources. However, this claim has never been fully confirmed by official historical records and remains a subject of debate.

Regardless of the controversy, Gheorghe Pănculescu is increasingly regarded as an important figure in the history of European engineering. His story highlights how innovative ideas developed far from major industrial centers can influence projects that later become universal symbols.

Today, while millions of visitors admire the Eiffel Tower each year, very few are aware of the Romanian engineer who, according to various historical accounts, may have indirectly contributed to the creation of France’s most famous monument.
